50 North 9th Street is a Philadelphia rowhome where commercial séances were held in 1874. Hosted by Spiritualist mediums Nelson and Jennie Holmes, the well-publicized gatherings featured the frequent materialization of ghost Katie King. Participants would gather around a large "spirit" cabinet where faces and hands of the deceased would appear. On one occasion, Katie King "showed her face several times" and "stepped out among the audience". The building is located in present-day Chinatown and currently serves as a private business. Address: 50 North 9th Street. Philadelphia, PA.

Known for their "remarkable power of producing faces, figures, and objects upon photographic plates," the group was led by Spiritualist William Hope. In September of 1919, a photography session captured an ectoplasmic bag and automatic writing from deceased founder Archdeacon Thomas Colley. The images were developed in presence of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and included in his book The Case for Spirit Photography. The Market Street studio has since been demolished and replaced with a parking lot. Address: 144 Market Street. Crewe, UK.

On the evening of February 5, 1863, Lincoln and his wife visited the dwelling to obtain military advice from Spiritualist mediums. Through the clairvoyance of Nettie Colburn Maynard, a ghost named ‘Old Dr. Bamford’ manifested and advised the President “Go in person to the front…and unite the soldiers as one man”. Several weeks later Lincoln made an inspirational trip to Union Army camps in Virginia. During the séance it was reported that a grand piano levitated across the room. The President investigated the instrument and “expressed himself perfectly satisfied that the motion was caused by some invisible power”. Lincoln continued to attend Spiritualist circles throughout his presidency and hosted séances at the White House before passing away in 1865. The home was rebuilt in 1876 and is part of the Georgetown National Historic District. Address: 3226 N Street. Washington, D.C.

Located in the village of Newark in Upstate New York, the home became famous when residents developed a communication system with the dead. In March of 1848, almost 3 months after moving into the cottage, the Fox family began to experience knocking sounds “so vibrant that the beds thrilled and shook”. On the night of March 31st, “one of the great points of psychic evolution was reached” when daughter Kate Fox challenged the unseen force to repeat the snaps of her fingers. When the snaps were answered with a rapping sound, the concept of Spiritualism was born. The phenomena of spirit communication spread throughout the country and the Fox Sisters became instant celebrities. The home developed into a shrine for Spiritualists and in 1915 was moved to a nearby psychic community in Lily Dale. On September 21, 1955 the Cottage burned to the ground. A memorial plaque is all that remains. Address: 1510 Hydesville Road, Newark, NY

When visitors arrived at the studio, they were seated in a Chippendale chair and told to remain still until his wife, Hannah Mumler, had summoned the spirits. Although it often took several attempts, customers always left “fully satisfied that the pictures were what they claimed to be--real photographs of real spirits.” Not everyone believed Mumler’s pictures were authentic and in 1869 he was arrested for “fleecing the public”. Although acquitted for lack of evidence, Mumler incurred substantial legal fees and relocated to Boston where he passed away at his mother-in-law’s home in 1884. The New York Mercantile Exchange was constructed onsite in 1882 and now hosts retail space. Address: 630 Broadway, New York, NY.
