Spanning the Pocantico River, the bridge is featured in Washington Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow as site of the Headless Horseman’s attack on Ichabod Crane. In the 1820 novel, Crane is leaving an evening party when he encounters the Headless Horseman on a bridge near Old Dutch Burying Ground. Ichabod is struck by the Horseman's severed head and is sent “tumbling headlong into the dust," leaving his fate unclear. The next morning his hat is discovered near pumpkin chunks. Washington Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow alleges that a deceased Hessian soldier buried in the churchyard “rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head”.
