Spanning the Pocantico River, the bridge is featured in Washington Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow as site of the Headless Horseman’s attack on Ichabod Crane. In the 1820 novel, Crane is leaving an evening party when he encounters the Headless Horseman on a bridge near Old Dutch Burying Ground. Ichabod is struck by the Horseman's severed head and is sent “tumbling headlong into the dust," leaving his fate unclear. The next morning his hat is discovered near pumpkin chunks. The original wooden bridge rotted out and was eventually replaced with a cement roadway in 1912. Address: Broadway and Gordon Avenue. Sleepy Hollow, NY.

Old Dutch Church is located at 430 Broadway in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Constructed in 1685, the church and adjacent burying ground are primarily known as home to the Headless Horseman.
Washington Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow alleges that a deceased Hessian soldier buried in the churchyard “rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head”. The 1820 short story declares the Horseman “vanishes, according to rule, in a flash of fire and brimstone” upon returning to the burial ground before daybreak. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the oldest house of worship in New York.
