Gatsby Mansion

Gatsby Mansion, known as Pendray Inn and Tea House, is a restaurant and hotel located in Laurel Point, Victoria. The area is considered a sacred burial ground for the Lekwungen Nation.

The tribe practiced sky burials, a funerary custom whereby corpses are placed high in trees to "allow the elements to clean the flesh from the bones". In 1885, immigrant Jacob Sehl cleared the land to build a furniture factory, destroying many human remains and forever cursing the location.

The factory burned down in 1894 and witnesses reported "figures leaping and dancing in the flames". In 1908, William Pendray reconstructed a paint factory on site, only to die instantly when a metal pipe fell from the ceiling. Pendray's son Ernest passed away several years later after being trampled by a spooked horse outside the factory.

Today the Gatsby Mansion is widely known as one of the most haunted locations in Victoria. It is rumored that "if you would like to see a ghost, there is a good chance your wish will be granted".

Manoa Chinese Cemetery was established in the late 1800s as a burial ground for Chinese immigrants. It serves as a final resting place for those “discriminated against in life and death”.

A burned-out tree located in the middle of the cemetery is site of numerous ghost stories.  It is believed to be a “portal for spirits” and many have observed “fireballs emanating from the tree”. Other spectral reports from the burial ground include a woman in Chinese attire kneeling at graves and disembodied sounds of children singing.

Washington Square was designed in 1682 as a public gathering location.  Due to a lack of space for victims of the Revolutionary War and Yellow Fever, the square was converted to a public burial ground where thousands of bodies remain today.

The site is known for its rich history of hauntings and ghost sightings. Many visitors report seeing a "half-crazed, specter-looking" woman wandering the square in search of her lost child. Other local legends claim that the ghost of a soldier often appears in full uniform next to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Additional folklore includes ghostly figures appearing in the gazebo, as well as strange lights, eerie mists, and sudden drops in temperature throughout the square.

Today the site is operated by the National Park Service and is a contributing property to the Independence National Historical Park. The square can be accessed 24 hours a day.

Ross Bay Cemetery opened in 1873 and is a final resting place for British Columbia aristocrats. Among notable burials are Governor James Douglas and artist Emily Carr.

The 27.5 acre site is reportedly "full of spirits". It is believed "no matter where you go in this graveyard, there is a chance you will encounter something, be it peaceful or disturbing".

Staff frequently report a "lady in black" seen "wandering around before vanishing". There are also tales of phantom mausoleums materializing at night in the burial ground.

General Grant National Memorial is the largest mausoleum in North America. The site serves as a final resting place for Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia Dent Grant.

Over 1.5 million people attended Grant’s funeral in New York City on August 8, 1885. His remains were placed at a temporary vault in Riverside Park until April 17, 1897, when the present Memorial was completed nearby.

Five years later, Julia was laid to rest beside her husband in a matching red granite sarcophagus.
The National Park Service now operates the site and offers self-guided tours of the mausoleum and burial chamber.

Tugboat Graveyard

The Staten Island Boat Graveyard, also known as Tugboat Graveyard, is a final resting place for nearly 100 decommissioned marine vessels. Founded in the 1930's by John J. Witte, the salvage business has accumulated freighters, barges, and ferries from the New York Harbor.

The abandoned ships sit in mud and shallow water, with many leaking radioactive material into the polluted waters of the Arthur Kill. Most of the site is inaccessible except for a makeshift path through muddy marshland located behind the Sleight Family Graveyard.

The business is now operated as the Donjon Iron and Metal Scrap Processing Facility. Rumors of mysterious nautical hauntings pervade neighborhood folklore and visitor reports to this day.

Old Olalla Cemetery

Old Olalla Cemetery is located in the Puget Sound region of Washington State. Established in 1901, the 1.5 acre burial ground contains victims of serial killer physician Linda Burfield Hazzard.

As a self-described “fasting specialist,” Hazzard believed food was the source of all ailments. Patients who visited the “Institute of Natural Therapeutics” were exposed to food depravation, enemas, and violent massages designed to rid the body of toxins. After dozens went missing at “Starvation Heights,” it is believed the physician used Spiritualism to “lock patients up and starve ’em to skin ‘n bone”.

Hazzard secretly disposed of victims at Old Olalla Cemetery. Reports of “bodies buried all over” and “a kid finding human skulls” gave the site a haunted reputation. According to local lore, “no one but the very stupid or very brave” visit and “many who pass by…remark how air seems colder”.

A few headstones and small post marker on the road shoulder are all that remain of the cemetery.
